Good point that North Indians should learn one of the dravidian languages. I feel there is a big divide between north and south. And if Govt doesn't make it compulsory the people must take initiative to learn one. South Indians have started adopting Hindi now. They are doing their bit alright.
Tulu, tamil, telugu, malayalam, kannada, etc any one would do.
Telugu is related with sanskrit and tamil is one of the oldest and perfect language. From tamil all other dravidian languages emerged. So a certain pride is associated with it.
Mother Tongue is necessary for knowing one's own identity, english for practical purposes and inter ethnic communication and global reasons, and any one Dravidian language for north indians/Hindi for south Indians. But I don't know what the North Eastern especially those outside bengal would think of it.

If the delivery and assessment are age appropriate and pedagogically sound there is no question of `Too many languages too soon`.

A child is born with a hundred expressive and communicative languages (Loris Malaguzzi), learning a few more is not an issue......it is teaching that needs to be tackled before this learning can happen. I did a blog on this with some personal insights very recently at :
